The digital economy has profoundly changed enterprises’ production and management. Based on A-share listed companies’ panel data, this paper evaluates the impact of prefecture-level city digital economy development on local enterprises’ green innovation performance. It finds that regional digital economy significantly improves enterprises’ green innovation performance, which is robust after tests. Mechanism analysis shows corporate investment efficiency mediates this effect: digital economy improves investment efficiency by alleviating over-investment, thus promoting green innovation. The results enrich relevant literature and have practical and policy significance.
